Designing with Native Plants: Beyond the Trend

Walk through any garden center in spring and you will find native plants. Purple coneflower, black-eyed Susan, wild bergamot, little bluestem — species that were once found only in specialty nurseries or dug from roadsides are now mainstream retail. This is, on balance, a good thing. But the mainstreaming of native plants has also produced a kind of aesthetic native-ism: the idea that if you plant the right species, you have done your ecological duty.
The reality is more complicated — and more interesting.
What Makes a Plant Native
A native plant is one that evolved in a particular region over thousands of years, developing relationships with the insects, birds, fungi, and soils of that place. These relationships are not incidental — they are the point. A native oak supports hundreds of species of caterpillars, which in turn support nesting birds. A non-native ornamental tree, however beautiful, may support almost none. The ecological value of a plant is not in its appearance but in its relationships.
This is the insight at the heart of Doug Tallamy's work, particularly his book Bringing Nature Home. Tallamy's research demonstrated that native oaks support roughly 500 species of caterpillars, while non-native ginkgos support five. That difference cascades through the food web: fewer caterpillars means fewer nesting birds, fewer bats, fewer small mammals. The choice of what to plant in a suburban yard is not just an aesthetic decision — it is an ecological one.
The Provenance Question
Not all native plants are created equal. A purple coneflower grown from seed collected in Illinois may be genetically quite different from one collected in Wisconsin — adapted to different soils, different rainfall patterns, different pollinators. When we buy native plants from large commercial nurseries, we often get plants of unknown provenance, grown from seed collected wherever it was cheapest, selected for uniformity and shelf appeal rather than local adaptation.
This matters most at the landscape scale. A restoration project using locally sourced seed will, over time, produce a plant community better adapted to local conditions than one using commercially sourced plants. For home gardens, the difference is less critical — any native plant is better than none. But for larger projects — prairie restorations, stormwater gardens, green infrastructure installations — provenance matters.
Design Principles for Native Landscapes
Designing with native plants requires a different aesthetic sensibility than conventional horticulture. Native plant communities are not tidy. They change through the seasons in ways that can look, to an untrained eye, like neglect. The standing stalks of last year's prairie plants are not dead — they are overwintering habitat for native bees, food for goldfinches, structure for the next year's seedlings. The "messiness" of a native garden is ecological function.
Several principles guide good native plant design. First, think in layers: ground covers, forbs, grasses, shrubs, understory trees, canopy trees. A landscape with all layers present supports far more biodiversity than one with only a single layer. Second, think in bloom time: a well-designed native garden provides nectar and pollen from early spring through late fall, supporting pollinators through their entire active season. Third, think in structure: the physical architecture of the planting — its height, density, and texture — determines what species can use it.
The Lawn Question
No discussion of native plant design can avoid the lawn. The American lawn covers an estimated 40 million acres — more land than any single crop. It requires enormous inputs of water, fertilizer, and pesticide. It supports almost no wildlife. And it is, in most cases, a cultural artifact rather than a functional landscape: a signal of respectability, a marker of property, a legacy of English aristocratic aesthetics transplanted to a continent where it was never ecologically appropriate.
Replacing lawn with native plantings is one of the highest-impact actions a homeowner can take for local ecology. Even a small patch of native plants — a rain garden, a pollinator strip along a fence, a meadow in a corner of the yard — can provide significant habitat value. The challenge is cultural as much as horticultural: neighbors, HOAs, and municipal codes often treat native plantings as violations of the aesthetic norm.
The Driftless Context
The Driftless Region has a particular richness of native plant communities — remnant prairies on south-facing slopes, oak savannas on ridgetops, sedge meadows in valley bottoms, rich mesic forests on north-facing hillsides. These communities are not just beautiful; they are functional. They hold soil on steep slopes, filter water before it reaches cold-water streams, provide habitat for species found nowhere else in the region.
Designing with native plants in the Driftless means drawing on this local palette — not just the commercially available natives, but the species that actually belong here. It means working with the topography and hydrology of the site rather than against them. And it means accepting that a landscape designed to function ecologically will look different from a landscape designed to look like a garden catalog.
That difference is not a compromise. It is the point.
